The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in Syria (IIMP) held last week  a three-day annual in-person meeting of its Advisory Board in Rabat, Morocco, bringing together family representatives, Syrian civil society actors, and international experts to reflect on ongoing efforts to clarify the fate and whereabouts of all missing persons in Syria and support their families.  

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives, assess current challenges, and reflect on experiences from other  transitional justice contexts.

As part of the program, the Independent Institution and members of the Advisory Board held a number of meetings with Morrocan institutions and stakeholders  to hear about  the country’s experience in transitional justice and reconciliation as well as lessons learned that may be useful in the context of Syria. The visit included meetings with the Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights of the Kingdom of Morocco,  as well as engagements with the National Human Rights Council, civil society representatives, and representatives of victims’ families.  

During the  meeting of the Advisory Board, its members   discussed with the Independent Institution a number of internal matters and reflected on observations and lessons drawn from the meetings held during the visit, including the importance of political will, meaningful participation of victims and civil society, and gender inclusion.  

Thanking the Kingdom of Morocco for hosting the meeting, Assistant Secretary-General Karla Quintana welcomed the opportunity to meet the Advisory Board and provide an update on the IIMP’s activities, as well as the members’ reflections and recommendations , emphasizing the value of learning from different national experiences.
